Policy Language

All syllabi for a particular course (whether offered residential only, online only, or residential & online) must reflect identical Course Descriptions, Course Rationales, and Course Learning Outcomes. Assessments for courses offered in both residential and online formats must also be comparable.

Policy Rationale

To achieve comparability between residential and online courses as it pertains to 1) course descriptions, 2) course rationales, and 3) course learning outcomes on syllabi, as well as assessments for those courses.

Definition of Glossary Terms

‘Online’ and ‘distance education’ are synonymous

Procedural Information


The Dean, Associate Dean, and Program Directors shall conduct semester-by-semester reviews in order to confirm that syllabi have not diverted from this requirement.

The following guidelines shall apply to reviews:

If a particular course offers multiple sections residence only (and has no online counterpart), all residential sections must have an identical Course Description, Course Rationale, and Course Learning Outcomes.

If a course is offered in both a residential and online formats, all sections (both residential and online) must have an identical Course Description, Course Rationale, and Course Learning Outcomes.

If a course exists in an online format only, it is safe to assume that the Course Description, Course Rationale, and Learning Outcomes are identical between sections.


1. All Fall 2015 residential syllabi must be compliant by August 14, 2015 to go into effect this Fall 2015 semester.

2. Any/All Help Tickets requesting any changes to any LUO syllabi need to be submitted on/before August 14, 2015 so that any changes to any LUO sections (if applicable) will be made for Fall D 2015.


Sanctions shall be determined by the Provost on a case-by-case basis.
